Author Callahan defines biological threats as “anything of biological origin that can harm human beings (or their goods or environment).” She goes on to list diseases, bacteria and viruses, and toxic chemicals or venoms produced by plants and animals as examples and excludes nuclear weapons and illnesses such as cancer or heart disease. Two chapters covering human infectious diseases are followed by two chapters covering threats to the food supply. Other chapters discuss ways in which humans contribute to threats and how some of these biological problems can be stopped or prevented. One of the drawbacks to the title is the language. Chapter titles such as “Food Insecurity” and “Fighting Back” lend a tone not usually found in a reference source. Still, the material is extremely useful and interesting to read. In addition to articles on major viral illnesses such as HIV and hepatitis, there are articles on less well-known but spreading concerns such as dengue fever and the reemergence of measles. Food pestilence as well as animal diseases that can impact the food chain are also discussed. For each threat, the author provides a standard treatment that includes, among other elements, statistics and brief discussions of who or what is at risk, prevention and treatment, and how the threat is perceived in popular culture. References are listed at the end of each article, providing further reading. This handbook is a good starting point for undergraduate students. Experts and serious graduate student will want to turn to Emerging Infectious Diseases: Trends and Issues (2d ed., 2007). Also available as an e-book. --Steve Stratton
